Keeping Your Spa and Salon Clients and Employees Healthy During Cold and Flu Season

I've always been concerned about germs and keeping my children healthy as a mother of four, especially during cold and flu season. As I'm sure we're all doing.

Don't get me wrong: I wasn't a zealot or anything... after all, a little dirt never hurt anyone, right? Well, that I'm aware of, and back in 'the good old days,' we didn't have all of the anti-bacterial products or even the same level of concern or attention that we do now.

Because we are so much more conscious today than we were years ago, it is critical that we do our best to avoid or protect ourselves from any harmful bacterium or virus that can not only take our time, but also threaten our healthy lives and rack up some rather pricey medical expenditures! However, no matter how hard we try at home or when we are out and about, we can never be completely safe.

I'll admit it... From May 2010 to September 2011, when I was caring for my daughter Kathryn around the clock while she was undergoing cancer treatments, I became a bit of a fanatic. It is critical not to come into contact with any virus or bacteria because the immune system is constantly low... So, I confess it: I carried disinfection wipes, disinfectant spray, and antibacterial hand gel with me wherever I went! To avoid coming into contact with "a bug," which would have been disastrous, everything had to be cleaned out before she touched it.

This is what inspired me to sit down and write this article. Michelle, Kathryn's twin sister, was recently admitted to the hospital with dizziness and a headache. She walked into the back area to have the lab work done, and she was told to come back and wait for the findings in the waiting room.

I urged her to see if she could just have the hospital call her with the results since you didn't have the flu and didn't want to risk getting it. She claimed that they were summoning people to the back, and that more would simply sit where that person had stood... no one was given a mask, and nothing was disinfected! This means that when Michelle and her father sat in the waiting area for the first time, everyone in the back was seated on the same sofas and chairs as them! They had to sit someplace, but we'll never know if anything was cleansed or sterilized in the waiting room or between treatments.
